SPM vs PPM: what actually changed

PPM stands for project portfolio management and is the older term, focused on planning and tracking projects. SPM stands for strategic portfolio management and is ServiceNow's current product family. The widening is the point: SPM connects strategy and funding to demand, delivery, and outcomes, rather than tracking projects in isolation.

Many teams still say PPM out of habit, and the ServiceNow instance in front of them says SPM. They are talking about the same portfolio, just at different scopes.

For reporting, the scope change is what matters. A PPM era report answers "is the project on track." An SPM era report has to answer "is the portfolio delivering what we funded it to deliver," which pulls in demand, outcomes, and spend that used to live in separate conversations.
