Dashboard vs report: and why neither is a deck

In ServiceNow, a report is a single saved view of data, such as a bar chart of open incidents by priority. A dashboard is a collection of reports arranged on one screen for a particular audience. Both are things you log in and look at. Neither is a document you can send to someone who will not log in.

This is the distinction that explains an otherwise strange situation: a team with excellent dashboards still rebuilding the same slides every month. The dashboards are doing their job, which is running the operation day to day. They are just not a deliverable.

The up and out reporting is the other job. Anything you are about to put in front of leaders, or out to stakeholders who are not in ServiceNow frequently, if ever, has to become a document with a structure, a narrative, and a date on it.
